Industrial photography is one of those services where the gap between adequate and professional is immediately obvious — and where that gap has direct commercial consequences. Tender submissions, investment pitches, supplier audits, recruitment campaigns: the businesses that present their operations with genuine professional photography consistently outperform those that don’t.

I’m Simon Plant, a commercial photographer with 34 years experience working with industrial and manufacturing businesses across the UK. Based in Somerset and working regularly throughout Devon, my industrial clients include Clarks Shoes, the Environment Agency, and Mimecast. I understand manufacturing environments, health and safety requirements, and how to create images that communicate operational capability and professional credibility.

What Industrial Photography Actually Does for Your Business

Industrial photography serves more business functions than most companies realise when they first commission it.

Marketing and business development — your website, brochures, and tender documents need photography that shows what you actually do, at a quality that matches your professional positioning. Stock imagery of anonymous factories doesn’t do this. Your facility, your equipment, your people, your processes: photographed professionally, these become genuine competitive assets.

Tender and contract submissions — major contracts increasingly require photographic evidence of facility capability, quality management systems, and operational standards. Photography that documents your operation professionally can be the difference between making a shortlist and being filtered out before anyone reads your submission.

Recruitment — skilled manufacturing and engineering staff have choices. Professional photography of your working environment, your equipment, and your team communicates that you’re a business worth working for. Phone camera shots from the factory floor communicate the opposite.

Health and safety documentation — systematic photographic records of workplace conditions, equipment states, and safety compliance serve both internal audit requirements and external regulatory purposes. This is documentation photography rather than marketing photography, and requires a different technical approach.

Annual reports and corporate communications — listed companies, businesses with institutional investors, and organisations producing formal annual reports need photography of operations that meets publication standard.

Insurance and asset documentation — comprehensive photographic records of plant, equipment, and facilities support reinstatement valuations and claims.

Industrial Photography Across Somerset

Somerset’s industrial sector is more varied than people outside the county usually realise — and more commercially significant.

Yeovil — Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing

Yeovil’s aerospace and advanced manufacturing cluster, centred on Leonardo (formerly AgustaWestland) and its extensive supply chain, represents some of the most technically sophisticated manufacturing in the South West. Photography for aerospace supply chain businesses needs to reflect that technical sophistication — clean, precise, professional imagery that matches the standards of the sector. I understand these environments and work safely and efficiently within them.

Bridgwater — Industrial Estate and Manufacturing

Bridgwater has one of the largest industrial estates in Somerset, covering everything from food processing and logistics to light engineering and distribution. The arrival of Hinkley Point C has brought significant industrial investment to the area. Construction documentation, facility photography, and operational imagery for Bridgwater’s manufacturing and industrial businesses form a regular part of my Somerset coverage.

Taunton — Engineering and Commercial

Taunton’s engineering services, precision manufacturing, and commercial operations require photography that reflects professional business standards. From engineering workshops to commercial warehousing, I cover the full range of Taunton’s industrial and commercial photography needs.

Chard, Ilminster, and South Somerset

South Somerset’s manufacturing base — food production, light engineering, agricultural technology — is often overlooked but economically significant. I’m based in this area and know it well. Local knowledge matters in industrial photography: understanding shift patterns, peak production periods, and the operational rhythms of local businesses means I can work around your schedule rather than disrupting it.

Somerset Levels — Agricultural and Food Processing

The Somerset Levels support significant food processing and agricultural technology operations. Photography for agri-food businesses — production facilities, processing operations, packaging lines — requires the same professional approach as any other industrial sector, with additional considerations around food safety compliance and hygiene standards.

Captured by insured pilot Simon Plant, this high-resolution drone shot documents agricultural scale and machinery efficiency, providing essential marketing assets for the Somerset farming and land management sectors.

Industrial Photography Across Devon

Devon’s industrial and manufacturing geography is concentrated in specific areas, each with distinct characteristics.

Exeter — Marsh Barton and the Science Park

Marsh Barton is Exeter’s primary industrial estate — one of the largest in the South West — covering automotive, engineering, trade, and light manufacturing across hundreds of businesses. The Exeter Science Park and surrounding innovation district adds technology, research, and advanced manufacturing to the mix. I cover industrial and commercial photography throughout Exeter regularly as part of my broader commercial photography services in Exeter.

East Devon — Manufacturing and Industrial Estates

East Devon’s manufacturing sector spans Honiton, Axminster, Exmouth, and the surrounding area. These businesses often lack access to professional photography services that understand industrial environments — most commercial photographers in the area focus on property and lifestyle work. My background in industrial and commercial photography across Somerset translates directly to East Devon’s manufacturing sector.

South Devon — The South Hams and Plymouth Fringe

The South Hams and Plymouth fringe contain a mix of specialist manufacturing, marine engineering, and technology businesses. Marine engineering photography in particular requires specific knowledge of working environments — I have the experience to work safely and effectively in boatyard, dock, and marine facility environments.

North Devon and Barnstaple

North Devon’s industrial and manufacturing sector — food production, engineering, and trade businesses centred on Barnstaple — is geographically isolated from most South West photographers. The drive from Somerset via the M5 makes North Devon accessible for full-day industrial shoots.

Types of Industrial Photography

Manufacturing Facility Photography

Comprehensive photography of your production environment — machinery, production lines, quality control processes, storage and logistics, and the human element of your workforce. This is the core of most industrial photography briefs and requires planning to capture both the scale of your operation and the detail that communicates capability.

Construction Documentation

Systematic photographic records of construction projects from groundworks to completion. Regular documentation visits create a visual record that serves multiple purposes: client reporting, planning compliance, insurance, marketing, and dispute resolution. I work with construction companies, developers, and project managers throughout Somerset and Devon on both residential and commercial construction documentation.

Warehouse and Logistics Photography

Logistics operations require photography that communicates scale, organisation, and operational efficiency. Racking systems, loading operations, inventory management, vehicle fleets — all need to be photographed in ways that reflect the professionalism of your operation. Lighting in large warehouse environments is a specific technical challenge that requires professional equipment and experience.

Engineering and Technical Photography

Precision engineering, specialist equipment, technical processes — photography that communicates technical sophistication to engineers, procurement managers, and technical buyers. This work sits at the intersection of industrial and product photography, requiring both environments experience and technical lighting capability.

Workforce and People Photography

The people in your business are often its most compelling differentiator. Workforce photography in operational environments — showing skilled staff working with real equipment in real conditions — is more credible and more effective than posed studio portraits for industrial businesses. I combine corporate headshot quality with genuine industrial environment knowledge.

Working Safely in Industrial Environments

Thirty-four years of working in industrial environments has taught me that safety awareness isn’t optional — it’s the foundation of effective industrial photography. I carry full public liability insurance, am comfortable working in environments requiring PPE, and understand the risk assessment processes that govern access to operational facilities.

I don’t need hand-holding through basic industrial health and safety. If your site has specific induction requirements, I’ll complete them. If there are restricted areas or operational sensitivities, I’ll work within those constraints. The goal is photography that works for your business without disrupting the operation that makes it run.

The Practical Process

Every industrial photography project starts with a brief conversation about what you need the images to do. Marketing photography, tender documentation, recruitment imagery, and compliance records all have different requirements, and the approach changes accordingly.

For facility photography I typically need a half-day to full day on site depending on the scope. Construction documentation visits are usually two to three hours. I work efficiently and unobtrusively — the production line keeps running, the warehouse keeps operating.

Images are delivered within 48-72 hours, processed to professional standard with 25 years of retouching experience behind the post-production. Files are supplied in formats optimised for web, print, and document use.
